ADELAIDE, Australia (AFP) - Australia won a gripping first Test against India by 48 runs with Nathan Lyon bowling them to victory in Adelaide on Saturday.
Off-spinner Lyon took seven wickets as Australia dismissed India for 315 in a thrilling finish.
India skipper Virat Kohli scored his second century in the match to put his side on track for a come-from-behind victory, but when he went to a catch in the deep, India s bid ended.
The dismissal of opener Murali Vijay for 99 triggered an Indian collapse, losing their last seven wickets for 73.
Brad Haddin took over the Australian captaincy when Michael Clarke suffered a new hamstring injury and was forced from the field after lunch.
Australia now head to next week s second Brisbane Test leading the four-match series 1-0.
